Cerita Dari Sebuah Rumah Panjang 111

Katanya hujan tidak pernah pulang
untuk kembali membasahi rumah panjang kita
tanah telah dinodai
sungai telah dicemari
dan dalam ribut ini
suaramu hilang
terkapai menongkah arah.

Tanah ini luas membentang negeri
membuahkan curiga ke ruang angkasa
tanganmukah yang rosak itu
mencoret duri di kertas putih
tumpah dakwat di kaki sendiri
hutan bertambah amarah
dan gugurlah ranting-ranting.

Katanya kerelaan telah diperkosa
dan kasih terhumban ke puncak gunung
cintailah hutan-rimba kita
dari dimusnah tangan payah.

Sememangnya tanah ini
adalah hak pusaka kita
diabadikan dari zaman silam
dan kita bercucuk tanam
memelihara hutan belantara
dan segala serigala.

Katanya mereka datang membawa pulang
tangisan dari sebuah rumah panjang
bukan kemajuan dan sebatang jalan
rumah panjang kita kecil
dan terpencil
tersepit di tepi sungai bersih
disirami bau wangi pokok rendang
dan mereka datang membawa pulang
tanah adat dan sehelai kertas.

Sememangnya suara yang pulang
mentafsir seribu keraguan.

There is no beautifier of complexion, or form or behaviour,
like the wish to scatter joy and not pain around us.

When I was young and free my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world. As I grew older and wiser, I discover the world would not change, so I shortened my sights somewhat and decided to change only my country. But, it too, seemed immovable. As I grew in my twilight years, in one last desperate attempt, I settled for changing only my family, those closest to me, but alas, they would have none of it. And now as I lie on my deathbed, I suddenly realised: If I had only changed my self first, then by example I would have changed my family. From their inspiration and encouragement, I would then have been able to better my country and, who knows, I may have changed the world.
